Smell Gas?

If You Smell Gas, Leave First

Leave the building right away and tell others to leave. From a safe distance, call 911 and Southwest Gas at 877-860-6020. Do not use light switches, lighters, thermostats or anything that could spark. Southwest Gas gives the same steps whether or not you are a customer.

Once the gas is off and the building is safe, call HQ. We offer 24/7 emergency service for gas line repair. Not sure it is gas? Read why a house smells like gas or rotten eggs and how to turn off the gas to your house.

Safety First

Licensed Gas Line Work, Done to Code

We recommend a licensed plumber for gas line work. In Phoenix, installing or changing a gas line needs a city permit and inspection, and the work must be done by a licensed contractor or by the owner-occupant of a single-family home working on their own house. The line has to pass a pressure test and inspection before the gas company connects or restores service. Our licensed and insured plumbers install, repair and test gas lines, and we pull the permit and coordinate the inspection. How It Works

How a Gas Line Job Works

  1. Plan the run

We look at the appliances, the route, the material and where the line ties in, and give you a free estimate and an upfront price.
  2. Permit

We pull the permit. Some cities want a piping diagram with each appliance's load, so we prepare that.
  3. Install and test

We run the line and pressure test it before it is covered or put into service.
  4. Inspection and service

The city inspects the work, and the gas company connects or restores service once it passes.
Your Side of the Meter

Who Handles What: Utility and Plumber

Southwest Gas owns and repairs the pipe up to and including the meter. Everything after the meter, the house piping, a yard line or an appliance connection, is yours, and a licensed plumber repairs it. If a gas technician red-tags an appliance or your meter, the fix on your piping needs a licensed plumber and often a permit before service is restored.

Finding the Leak

How We Find a Gas Leak

We find a leak by testing the piping, not by guessing or digging at random. First we cap every gas appliance in the house at its flex connector, so the piping is sealed off on its own. Then we pump the system up with air at the meter and watch a gauge. If the needle drops, that points to a leak in the piping, and we narrow it down section by section and pinpoint it with a gas detector and leak detection solution before we open a wall or a trench.

It is the same air test a house needs when Southwest Gas has locked the meter for a leak or the gas has been shut off for a repair. So the test that finds the problem also sets up the fix. Read how a gas line pressure test works.

Gas Clearance

Getting a Gas Clearance and Your Gas Back On

A gas clearance is the city's sign-off that your gas piping can go back in service. In Phoenix you need one for new gas piping, a change to existing piping, a repair after the gas was shut off, and a meter Southwest Gas locked for a leak on your side. Any time a gas clearance is required, a permit is required, and the plumbing contractor pulls it. Here is how we handle it:

  1. We pull the permit. You do not have to deal with the city yourself.
  2. We find and fix the leak. Capped appliances, an air test from the meter, then the repair.
  3. We run the air test. Our practice is to pump the system to at least 15 psi and hold it for 10 minutes. That is above the floor in the fuel gas code Phoenix enforces: 1.5 times the working pressure and never below 3 psig, held at least 10 minutes in a single-family home, with larger systems held longer.
  4. The city inspects. The inspector checks the work and the test. Once it passes, the city issues the gas clearance.
  5. Southwest Gas turns the gas back on. Only Southwest Gas can turn the gas on at the meter. It runs its own leak check when it does, and then your appliances are relit.

Swapping an appliance in kind with no piping changes, or a meter locked for non-payment, needs no city permit; Southwest Gas handles that turn-on. Read how to get gas back on after a red tag and gas turn-on after inspection by Valley city.

Restaurants And Commercial

Gas Lines for Kitchens and Commercial Buildings

Kitchens and commercial buildings add appliances, longer runs and a city inspection. We repair and install gas piping for cooking equipment, water heaters and building service, with the permit and inspection handled. In Phoenix, a restaurant's gas piping gets a city inspection and pressure test when it is installed or altered. See whether a restaurant needs a gas leak inspection and gas smell in a restaurant: leak or sewer gas.

Need paperwork for an inspector? Our gas leak inspection and certification service covers it. For the rest of the building, see commercial plumbing.

Materials And Tests

Pipe, Tubing and Pressure Tests

Both black iron pipe and flexible CSST tubing are code approved when installed correctly. Black iron is rigid and durable. CSST installs faster and must be bonded to the electrical grounding system. Read CSST vs black iron gas pipe.

Every new or altered line is pressure tested before service. See how a gas line pressure test works.

What Drives the Price

What Affects the Cost of Gas Line Work

We do not post prices because the job decides them. These are the factors:

  • Length and route. A short appliance run is a different job from a long trench.
  • Material. Black iron or CSST, and above or below ground.
  • Appliances. The number and load of appliances the line feeds.
  • Permit and inspection. Requirements differ by city.
  • Repair or new. A repair, an extension and a new service each differ.

The way to get an exact number is the free estimate. Read the cost factors to add a gas line.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Anything else, call (602) 675-1555.

Do plumbers fix gas leaks, or does Southwest Gas?

Both, on different sides of the meter. Southwest Gas responds to leak reports and owns and repairs the pipe up to and including the meter. A leak on your side, in the house piping, a yard line, or an appliance connector, is fixed by a licensed plumber you hire. Report the leak to 911 and Southwest Gas first.

Do I need a permit to install a gas line in Arizona, and who can do it?

Yes, a permit is required to install or modify a gas line in Phoenix, and the work must be done by an Arizona ROC-licensed contractor, or by the owner of a home they live in under the state owner-builder exemption. The owner still needs the permit and the inspection. After install, the line must pass a pressure test and inspection before the gas company will connect or restore service.

How does a gas line pressure test work?

A gas line pressure test checks isolated piping for evidence of leaks under specified test conditions. Phoenix requires at least 1.5 times the proposed maximum working pressure, never below 3 psig, held for at least 10 minutes in a single-family home. A gauge drop indicates a leak unless it can be readily traced to another cause.

What does a Southwest Gas red tag mean?

A red tag means a gas technician found an unsafe condition and shut off gas to an appliance or to the whole meter. Do not relight it or turn the valve back on yourself. Have a licensed plumber fix the problem, get a city permit and clearance if the leak was on your piping, then Southwest Gas restores service.
