Why is my dishwasher not filling with water after installation?

Updated October 4, 2026
Quick Answer

A dishwasher that will not fill after installation needs its supply valve, visible hose routing, door closure and exact error message checked first. A machine that has not drained may also refuse another fill. Follow model-specific instructions for an accessible float; do not bypass it, remove live electrical covers or assume a blocked drain means a failed inlet valve.

Confirm the water connection you can see

Identify the dishwasher's shutoff under the sink and check its position without forcing a stuck or leaking valve. Look at exposed hose sections for a sharp kink. A working kitchen faucet does not prove the separate dishwasher branch is open.

Do not loosen a pressurized fitting or pull a connected appliance out of its opening to inspect underneath. The cited Bosch installation manual requires the water and electrical supplies to be off for installation or service and warns against working on a charged hot-water line. Its plumbing requirements apply to the models covered by that manual, so compare them with your dishwasher's own instructions.

For the complete connection layout, see installing a dishwasher water line. This troubleshooting check does not replace a proper installation inspection.

Is it actually a fill problem?

Make sure the door closes and the intended cycle has started according to the owner's manual. If the dishwasher still holds water from an earlier attempt, investigate drainage too. GE says failure to drain can prevent a dishwasher from filling again. A newly connected disposal with its dishwasher inlet still blocked belongs to that drain investigation, not an automatic inlet-valve replacement.

If the machine completed its wash and the complaint is a flashing Sani indicator, compare the model-specific failed-sanitization result before treating it as a no-fill fault. Cycle completion and sanitization success are separate observations.

Our dishwasher not draining guide covers the outgoing path. If water is leaking under the cabinet, stop the cycle and use why a dishwasher leaks before continuing tests.

Check the float only when the owner manual permits it

Some GE models have a flood float that owners can inspect through the filter area; other models require service. GE's specific flood-float article lists the covered model prefixes. Do not use those steps on another machine, tape down a float or bypass a safety switch to force filling.

If the visible installation checks are correct, arrange appliance service for the inlet valve, float circuitry or controls. A plumbing shutoff, supply connection or household drainage defect belongs with a plumber. Keep the model number, error code and installation date ready so the right part of the system gets checked.
