Washing Machine Outlet Box

Updated October 4, 2026
Definition

A washing machine outlet box is a recessed plumbing assembly that provides a finished, accessible location for the washer's water connections and, on many models, its drain-hose opening. The box houses or organizes specified plumbing components. It is not the washer hose, the complete drain standpipe or a pan that catches water beneath the appliance.

Supply and drain functions share a location

The visible hot and cold valves connect to the washer's supply hoses. A drain opening, where provided, receives the drainage arrangement specified for that installation. The pipe, trap and vent beyond the opening remain separate parts of the building drainage system.

Oatey's outlet-box selection guide describes different valve and drainage layouts. Some boxes can accommodate supplies from above or separate drain positions; others cannot be inverted. The guide's configurations are product-specific examples, so an opening or knockout should not be used merely because it appears convenient.

An outlet box can make the shutoff valves easier to identify and reach. Access still depends on the finished layout and where the appliance sits. Our washer hose-burst guide covers stopping an actual supply leak. If water is spilling from the drain opening, see washing machine drain overflow instead.

The wall and connections affect the model

The box needs a suitable cavity, attachment arrangement and compatible supply connections. Oatey lists different connection options for copper, CPVC, PEX and other identified systems. Choosing the valve end is therefore part of choosing the box, not a detail settled by its plastic frame.

Some models include water hammer arrestors and some do not. An arrestor is a separate device for a pressure surge; it does not catch a hose leak or clear a drain blockage. Ask what components the selected assembly actually includes.

A fire-rated wall can require a specifically approved outlet-box arrangement. Oatey's fire-rated product family is designed for stated rated-wall applications. That does not establish a fire rating for a standard box or every wall surrounding the listed product. The approved wall assembly and exact installation details still need to match.

Information for a relocation or replacement

Provide photographs of the existing valves, drain opening and surrounding wall. Ask which model, valve connection types and drainage configuration are proposed, and how the finished installation preserves service access.

Moving the box can involve supply and drainage changes behind the wall. Its mounting height and openings must work with the actual washer instructions, piping design and applicable local requirements. A general product-selection article is not a universal installation-height rule.

Keep the valves accessible rather than covering them with cabinetry. If a valve is seized, a hose is damaged or water reaches electrical equipment, treat that condition separately; buying a new box does not resolve every laundry-room hazard.
