Why is my dishwasher leaking?

Stop the water and the power before you look. Turn off the dishwasher, switch off its circuit breaker, and shut the water supply if water is still spreading. GE's installation guide says a hand shutoff valve in an accessible place, such as under the sink, is optional but strongly recommended and may be required by local codes. Then work out where the water is coming from. GE's leak guide sorts causes by where you see the water: underneath, from the door, from the air gap, or from under the cabinet. It also lists the underlying causes: suds, a plumbing concern, door or gasket problems, and water thrown out through the door. A leak underneath can soak the floor for a long time without much showing, so check the cabinet floor and the flooring around the machine, too.

Read your owner's manual for anything model-specific. GE points to the manual for the right use of detergent and rinse aid.

Door leaks have three common causes, and the first is the easiest to fix.

Suds. GE says that using the wrong type of detergent, or too much, can cause over-sudsing, and that suds can push water out of the dishwasher and cause leaks or flooding. Only detergent made for automatic dishwashers should be used. GE lists other sources of suds that catch people out:

• Dish soap left on dishes. If you pre-wash with dish soap, rinse it off thoroughly.
• Rinse aid spills. Liquid rinse aid spilled while filling can cause suds and leaks, so wipe it up right away.
• Sponges and cloths. Dish soap in a sponge or cloth can start suds if you wash it in the dishwasher.

If you open the door and find suds, GE says to turn the dishwasher off and let them settle, which can take several hours, and to make sure any water has been pumped out of the tub. For clearing them, GE's suds article suggests sprinkling several tablespoons of non-dairy coffee creamer over the suds, because the fat helps break down the bubbles, then waiting five minutes. Repeat as needed to flush the material down the drain.

The door gasket. The gasket is the rubber seal around the door. GE says to check it regularly for tears, cuts and wear, and that a torn, cut or worn gasket may need to be replaced. One detail from GE avoids a false alarm: a gap in the gasket several inches wide at the bottom of the door is normal.

Water thrown out of the door. GE says particles of food, detergent or mineral deposits can deflect water out through the front door, and that holes or splits in the side of a spray arm can do the same. Make sure the spray arm holes are clear.

### Could the way it was installed be the cause?

Yes. GE says that after installation you should make sure the door is not hitting the underside of the counter or the adjacent cabinet. If it is, it may still latch but not seal tightly, so the dishwasher should be repositioned to stop the contact. The same check applies after a countertop or cabinet change.

Water under the machine usually comes from a connection, and the installation instructions show which ones to check.

1. 1The supply connection and elbow. The Bosch instructions warn not to overtighten the 90 degree elbow on the water inlet valve, because doing so may damage the valve and cause a water leak. GE gives the same warning, saying an overtightened elbow can bend the valve bracket or break the valve fitting. 2. 2An old braided supply hose. GE says to label a flexible braided hose with its installation date and that braided hoses, elbows and gaskets should be replaced in 5 years. GE also lists the supply line pressure range for the dishwasher, 20 to 120 psi.
3. 3The drain hose connection. Bosch has the installer secure the dishwasher drain hose to the rubber drain hose adaptor with a spring clamp and then attach the adaptor to the house plumbing with a screw clamp. A loose clamp or a hose not fully pushed onto the adaptor is a place to look. GE adds that you should make sure nothing is leaking from the inlet hose or around the drain hose.
4. 4A machine that is not level. Bosch instructs the installer to make sure the dishwasher is level and gives the adjustment: the rear leveler is turned from the center screw at the front, and the front levelers are turned with a screwdriver, with a right turn raising the machine. GE lists door contact with the counter as another installation problem and tells you to reposition the dishwasher if it touches the cabinet.

Water from the chrome cylinder beside the faucet is usually not a dishwasher fault. It is a sign the water cannot get out through the sink drain. GE says that a clogged sink can keep the dishwasher's water from draining, and that if you have an air gap, backed-up water will come out of the air gap instead of backing up into the dishwasher. GE's advice is to keep the sink and air gap clear.

That behavior is by design. Bosch's installation instructions cover drain connections in four ways: directly to the undersink connection, directly to a disposer connection, or to either one through an air gap. Bosch also says the drain hose must be installed with a portion of it at least 20 inches off the cabinet floor or the dishwasher may not drain properly, and that the disposer's dishwasher drain plug must be removed before the drain hose is connected. The 2024 IPC's Section 409.4 says the waste connection of a residential dishwasher must connect directly to a wye branch on the sink tailpiece, directly to the food waste disposer's dishwasher connection, or through an air break to a standpipe, and that the waste line must rise and be securely fastened to the underside of the sink rim or countertop. Section 409.2 of the same code says the water supply to a dishwashing machine must be protected against backflow by an air gap that is integral with the machine or by a backflow preventer. That is one reason the supply and drain are set up as they are.

Match the person to the part:

• Call an appliance technician for the gasket, inlet valve, spray arm and other parts inside the machine. GE says that if its suggestions do not resolve the problem, service may be needed.
• Call a plumber if water is coming from the supply connection, the drain connection, the air gap or the sink drain, or if the sink itself is clogged. GE ties air gap overflow to a clogged sink, which is a drain problem, not an appliance problem.

If you replace the dishwasher, have the supply, drain and air gap checked at the same time. The installation instructions both put the supply and drain connections in the installer's hands, so a leak that shows up soon after a new install is worth raising with whoever installed it.
