Restaurant Kitchen Sink Backing Up: Clearing the Line and Finding Why

Water rising in a restaurant kitchen sink when other fixtures run. How we cable and flush the line, camera it, and who has to approve the work on leased space.

Short answer

When a restaurant kitchen sink backs up, especially when other fixtures run, the stoppage is usually in the shared line past the sink. We cable and flush the line to open it, camera it to see why it stopped, and write a proposal if the pipe needs more than clearing. Same-day response is common.

What was wrong

The call usually sounds the same. Water in the kitchen sink does not go down, or it rises when the dishwasher or the next sink empties. A sink that clogs alone has a clog in its own branch. A sink that backs up when something else drains is telling you the line they share is restricted.

That difference decides the visit. A one-sink problem is a quick job at the trap and branch. A shared-line problem means the stoppage sits farther downstream, and the tool and the time both change.

How we find the cause

We ask which sinks and drains are affected and whether it happens at a certain time of day, such as after the dishwasher dumps. On site the tech runs water to see where it stands and where it goes, and opens the line with a cable. If the cable brings back grease, scale or food solids, that tells us what the kitchen is sending down.

A camera on the line afterward finds the reason it stopped: a belly in the pipe, a bad joint, roots, or a line that is simply coated through. Calls like this are often urgent, so after-hours or same-day response is normal.

What fixes it

The cable and flush gets the sink draining again that visit. If the camera shows a repeating cause, we write a proposal. That can be jetting to scour the whole line, a spot repair, or a change in how the kitchen handles grease and solids. The goal is to stop the symptom first and then give you the choice about the permanent fix, with the price before work starts.

What to know before you call

Leased kitchens add a step. Access and approval often run through the property manager, owner or tenant, and who pays can decide how fast the work is scheduled. Tell us who authorizes work and whether the site uses a vendor portal or a not-to-exceed limit on the work order. Some sites ask for before-and-after photos and an on-site sign-off, and we collect them as part of the visit.

Until we arrive, keep the sink out of use, do not run the dishwasher into it, and keep food prep away from standing water. If anything wastewater-related reached the floor, read our reopening checklist for sewage backups before you restart service.
