Interior Drain Line Backing Up Again and Again in a Restaurant
A restaurant waste line that clears and clogs again is telling you something. Why repeat backups happen, how a camera finds the cause, and when a repair is due.
When an interior drain line in a restaurant keeps backing up, clearing it again only buys time. We hydro-jet the line, run a camera to find the cause, such as a sag, a bad joint, roots or heavy coating, and write a proposal for the repair. Finding the root cause matters more than clearing it again.
What was wrong
Every manager has a version of this story. The drains back up, a plumber clears them, and a few weeks later they back up again. Each visit solves the symptom and nothing else. By the third time, finding out why is the better use of the visit.
Repeat backups in a kitchen drain line come from a short list. Grease and food solids coat the pipe and narrow it, the pipe sags and holds water at a low spot, a joint has shifted, or roots or debris are entering through a crack. Each of these needs a different fix, and a cable cannot tell them apart.
How we find the cause
The first visit stops the symptom. The tech cables or jets the line so the kitchen can run. When the notes show it is a repeat problem, we move to a camera. A camera on the line shows the pipe from the inside, so we can see coating, a low spot, a break or roots rather than guessing.
We pay attention to the pattern. A line that clogs after busy weekends points to loading and coating. A line that clogs at the same spot every time points to a defect at that spot. A line that clogs when a particular fixture drains points to that fixture's branch.
What fixes it
If the camera shows heavy coating, hydro jetting scours the full pipe wall, and a second camera pass confirms what is left. If it shows a sag, a broken joint or roots, the fix is a repair, and we write a proposal with the scope and the price before work starts. Repairs that involve cutting out a section or opening the floor need the approval your site requires.
We tell you honestly whether the line needs a repair or can be cleaned and watched.
What to know before you call
Keep the notes from earlier visits: dates, which drains, what the plumber found. They help us see whether the problem is getting worse. Tell us if the backups happen at certain times of day or after certain tasks. Our reopening checklist for sewage backups explains what to clean up if wastewater reached the kitchen floor.
