Identify the disc and its operating mechanism
AVK's butterfly-valve explanation describes the disc moving between fully open and fully closed with a quarter turn. It also distinguishes handles, gears and actuators. A geared handwheel can therefore require a different hand movement from the disc's own travel; a wheel is not proof that the valve is a gate valve.
The article describes centric and eccentric designs through their shaft and disc arrangement. Those are specific valve geometries, rather than permission to substitute one manufacturer's disc, liner or actuator into another body.

Read service limits with the complete valve
The body, disc, seat or liner, shaft and operating assembly need the identified product's material and service information. A matching nominal connection size does not establish its pressure, temperature or chemical limits.
Victaulic's field handbook gives instructions for its named butterfly-valve series. It treats permitted throttling as a model-and-system question and warns that unsuitable operating conditions can cause noise, vibration or damage. Do not transfer those named instructions into a universal partly-open setting for every butterfly valve.
The valve flow coefficient entry explains why internal passage geometry and operating position matter to flow documentation. A valve that fits between two pipe ends can still be unsuitable for the required duty.
Connection clearance and isolation need verification
The selected disc must have its documented operating clearance relative to the connected equipment. Victaulic separately identifies flange-adapter compatibility for named series and warns that an adjacent end cap can interfere with disc travel. Its grooved connection and flange arrangements still require the actual matching components.
For replacement work, record the model, connections, operator and available clearance. Include the identified valve and what it isolates in commercial shutoff planning, with the responsible provider verifying the actual supply paths.
A closed handle or indicator does not alone prove that connected spaces are depressurized. Victaulic warns that a capped space can retain pressure after valve operation. Do not loosen an end cap, actuator or connection to investigate; have the affected system isolated and made safe under its documented service requirements.
