Pipe Flange

Updated October 4, 2026
Definition

A pipe flange is an identified rim or plate at a piping connection that forms a bolted joint with a compatible mating face. The assembly includes the specified sealing arrangement and hardware. This pressure-piping meaning is different from a toilet's closet flange, which connects and supports the fixture at its drain opening.

A bolted face is part of a complete joint

Flanged connections can provide a dismantling point for equipment or piping. Charlotte Pipe describes flanging as one joining method for its plastic piping, including suitable connections between plastic and metallic systems.

That does not make every flat ring compatible. The mating face, bolt pattern, gasket, pipe-end connection and service rating all belong to the identified assembly. A matching hole count alone does not establish that the joint can seal or carry its intended load.

Charlotte's instructions specify a full-face gasket suited to the conveyed chemicals and compatible mating components. Victaulic's field handbook separately identifies flange-adapter styles with their own mating-face and hardware requirements. Those instructions cannot be combined into one universal flange recipe. Where the gasket specification lists hardness, elastomer durometer explains the stated scale and measurement conditions.

Connection standards and service limits are separate

A dimensional or bolt-pattern reference does not replace the product's permitted pressure, temperature and fluid. Read the manufacturer's actual rating information and applicable approvals alongside the physical dimensions.

A flange adapter attached to a grooved pipe end is also a specific component. Our grooved coupling entry explains that different pipe-end system. A groove, flange face or gasket material by itself does not authorize a transition between arbitrary products.

Alignment and support matter after the components are selected. Charlotte warns that flanges must not be used to draw a misaligned piping assembly together and addresses support where buried settling could disturb alignment. Bolts are not a substitute for correcting the piping arrangement.

Reading a replacement or shutdown proposal

Ask for the flange or adapter model, mating component, gasket specification, hardware and documented service conditions. Confirm which installation instructions govern the completed joint, including any product-specific tightening and support requirements. If the gasket documents report compression set, retain its test conditions rather than treating the percentage as a prediction of joint leakage.

Keep the identified equipment and connection documents with the specification-sheet file. For occupied premises, commercial shutoff planning addresses the separate isolation and restart coordination.

Do not loosen a bolted face to investigate a pressurized leak. The relevant equipment and affected piping must be made safe under their actual service procedures by qualified providers. A joint that stops visibly dripping does not establish correct assembly, required testing or approval for a different application.
