Rising and Non-rising Valve Stems

Updated October 4, 2026
Definition

Rising and non-rising describe how a gate valve's stem moves while its internal gate opens or closes. A rising stem travels outward as the gate opens. A non-rising stem rotates without that outward travel while its threaded connection moves the gate inside the body. The distinction affects space and position indication, rather than proving that a valve seals.

Watch the stem design, not just the handwheel

AVK's gate-valve explanation describes a rising stem moving with the gate and giving a visual indication of position. Its non-rising design keeps the stem within the valve body while the gate rises and lowers internally.

The same manufacturer offers identified non-rising models with a factory-mounted position indicator. It is therefore inaccurate to assume every gate valve hides its position or every wheel must be turned to find out. Identify the actual stem and indicator arrangement from its documentation.

NIBCO's bronze-valve manual separately lists rising and non-rising figure numbers and describes their internal connections. Its instructions apply to those named products. A round handwheel alone does not establish which figure is installed or that another maker uses the same operating direction.

Clearance and application remain model questions

A traveling stem needs the space required by its identified design. Non-rising construction can reduce the vertical space used by the stem, but still needs access for operation and maintenance. Victaulic's field handbook requires adequate surrounding clearance for its named gate valves.

Stem style also does not establish drinking-water approval, permitted fluid, pressure or temperature. AVK discusses underground use within its product context; that is not permission to bury an unidentified valve or omit required access.

Our ball-versus-gate comparison covers a separate shutoff selection. The water-valve guide distinguishes gate valves from regulators, check valves and other devices. A stem description is one component detail within that broader identification.

Position indication does not verify isolation

Record the manufacturer, model or figure number, stem style and any indicator before planning work. Ask which clearance and operating instructions govern that exact valve. For occupied premises, include the identified valve in commercial shutoff planning.

A visible closed indication cannot by itself show that the gate seats tightly or that all alternate supply paths are isolated. The responsible provider must verify the required isolation and pressure relief before opening piping.

Do not force a seized wheel, remove packing or treat a raised stem as permission to service a live valve. NIBCO's manual cautions against repacking under pressure, even where a valve appears back-seated. Have an uncertain or leaking shutoff assessed under the installed system's service requirements.
