Why is my softener still showing low salt after I filled the tank?

Updated October 4, 2026
Quick Answer

Some softeners require you to update a salt-level number after every refill; adding salt alone does not update that reminder. GE GXSF30V and Whirlpool WHES40/WHES44 use specified owner-entered level controls. Match the displayed message and model first, then update the actual level using its manual. A reminder reset does not prove the water is soft.

Does this model need a manual salt-level update?

The GE GXSF30V manual tells owners to reset the salt-level indicator each time they add salt. Its SALT LEVEL setting should match the numbered scale inside the brine tank. The DAYS TO EMPTY value updates when that level changes.

The Whirlpool WHES40/WHES44 manual likewise says to set the salt level each time salt is added. Its SET SALT LEVEL button and display indicators correspond to the scale on the brinewell. Use those instructions only for the named controls; a separate electronic salt sensor or another softener may work differently.

With safe, accessible owner controls, compare the actual salt level with the manual's scale and enter that level. Do not choose a higher number simply to extinguish the warning. Keep the brinewell cover in place and avoid interfering with internal parts.

Is the light reporting salt, time or an error?

Read the accompanying words, not just the flashing color. GE distinguishes a DAYS TO EMPTY warning from an Err display and a clock that needs attention. Whirlpool separately identifies salt-level indications, SCHEDULED CLEAN, CURRENT TIME and Err.

The model-specific GE error guide addresses an actual fault display. Updating the salt counter is not a repair for an error. Photograph the original message if you need service.

Why might the estimate still look unusual?

GE explains that DAYS TO EMPTY can behave erratically during the first several weeks while the system learns water use. Follow the actual manual's checking instructions rather than assuming the displayed estimate directly measures the contents of the tank.

A tank can also contain salt without supplying usable brine. The existing softener-not-working guide covers physical salt bridges and other causes of hard water. Do not keep adding bags to a tank already filled appropriately in an attempt to repair a reminder or bridge.

What confirms that the refill solved the real concern?

A correct level entry only restores the reminder's information. Use a soft-water hardness check if treatment performance is the concern. If the tank had actually run out, follow the maker's applicable recharge instructions separately; resetting SALT LEVEL does not recharge the resin.

Record the model, display wording, refill date and entered level. Continue routine softener maintenance, and arrange assessment if the physical salt use or water hardness remains abnormal.
