Clogged or Backing-Up Urinals in Commercial Restrooms
A urinal that drains slowly or backs up is usually scale and debris in a small line, or a stoppage downstream. How we clear it and keep it from returning.
A urinal that drains slowly or backs up usually has scale and debris in its small drain, or a blockage further down the line it shares with other fixtures. We clear the trap and the branch, and jet or camera the line if more than one fixture is slow.
What was wrong
Business restrooms report it plainly: a urinal is holding water, draining slowly, or overflowing when it flushes. It gets taped off, and the restroom is down a fixture.
Urinals have a small trap and a narrow drain, and they run on very little water, especially the low-flow and waterless kinds. Mineral scale, uric salts and debris like cigarette butts, gum and paper towels collect in that narrow path.
How we find the cause
Our first question is whether the problem is just that urinal. If the other fixtures in the restroom drain fine, the blockage is in the urinal's own trap or branch. If a toilet or floor drain is slow too, the problem is further downstream, in the shared line.
We also check the flush valve. A urinal that doesn't get its full flush can't carry waste through, and a valve that is partly closed or worn can make a clean drain look clogged.
What fixes it
- Trap or strainer clogged: remove the debris, clear the trap and flush it through.
- Scale in the branch: clear it mechanically and, if needed, treat it, then restore the flush volume.
- Shared line slow: snake or jet the line, and camera it if it recurs.
If the clog keeps returning or the fix needs more than a clear and a flush, we write a proposal for the larger repair, so you approve it before the work starts.
What to know before you call
Tell us whether it's one urinal or several fixtures, and when it started. Take the fixture out of service until it's cleared, and don't use chemical openers in a fixture we're about to work on. If the restroom is the only one for customers or staff, say so, since that changes the timing. For a leased space, the lease decides whether the tenant or the landlord orders the repair. Photos of the fixture and the brand on the flush valve help us bring the right parts.
