Capillary Solder Joint

Updated October 4, 2026
Definition

A capillary solder joint is a connection in which molten solder flows into the prepared narrow space between a tube and a matching fitting. Capillary action helps draw the solder through that gap. The connection depends on the joint's geometry, suitable materials and preparation, rather than a visible coating placed over its outside.

A capillary solder joint is a connection in which molten solder flows into the prepared narrow space between a tube and a matching fitting. Capillary action helps draw the solder through that gap. The connection depends on the joint's geometry, suitable materials and preparation, rather than a visible coating placed over its outside.

The space between the parts has a purpose

The Copper Development Association's handbook describes solder flowing between the tube and fitting by capillary action. Its joining discussion explains that the clearance is important to that flow; a loosely matched pair of parts is not automatically an acceptable solder joint.

Oatey's copper-soldering guide also describes solder being drawn into a properly prepared joint. This explanation identifies the joining mechanism. It does not supply a torch procedure or approval to heat an existing concealed or leaking connection.

Matching tube size, fitting dimensions and the identified joining materials remain essential. A compression ferrule and a flare fitting create different mechanical connections; their sealing arrangements should not be interpreted as solder clearances.

Solder, flux and appearance answer different questions

Solder supplies the joining metal. CDA describes flux as helping wet the prepared surfaces so the molten solder can spread appropriately. The two materials have different roles and need to meet the intended service requirements.

A bright external bead cannot show that the full intended joint space was correctly filled. Conversely, the appearance of an old joint does not identify the solder's composition or establish its suitability for drinking-water service.

Our copper drinking-water guide addresses the separate material and lead questions. Capillary action alone does not establish a pressure rating, drinking-water approval or the condition of the surrounding tube.

What the joint description should clarify

Ask whether the proposed connection is a soldered capillary joint and which compatible tube, fitting, solder and flux specifications apply. Joint ratings and installation requirements must come from the identified components and the applicable project requirements.

For a repair-method decision, compare copper press fittings and soldered joints. Pressing uses a different connection system; adding solder over a leaking press seal is not the same as making a correctly specified capillary joint.

Have a leaking connection assessed with the pipe condition and access visible to the responsible installer. Do not assume additional solder on the exterior repairs an incomplete joint or deteriorated tube. The work also needs the appropriate isolation, heat protection and completed verification for its actual location.
