Some steam dryers need a separate cold-water connection. Whirlpool's cited instructions show a shared washer-and-dryer Y connection and direct you to the installed model's instructions. For missing steam, check the accessible water supply, hose condition and selected cycle before suspecting an internal fault. Do not transfer hose lengths or tightening directions to another dryer.
Identify how this dryer gets water
A steam option does not tell you how every dryer receives water. Look up the complete model and its installation instructions. The water hookup is separate from the dryer's gas or electrical connection and from its exhaust duct; this guide addresses the water side only.
Whirlpool's water-line instructions describe a cold-water inlet with a Y connector sharing the washer's cold faucet. They specify new hoses and direct owners to the actual installation instructions. Another product may have a different arrangement. Do not copy this page's illustrated hose lengths, inlet location or coupling turns onto an unidentified dryer.
Follow the accessible supply path
Record whether a water hose is actually connected, which valve feeds it and whether that identified valve is open. Look for a visible kink, damage or leak without pulling a heavy appliance against its hoses, gas connection or cord. A washer receiving water does not by itself establish that the dryer's branch is open and unobstructed.
Whirlpool's steam troubleshooting guidance lists a connected inlet hose, turned-on supply and freedom from hose restriction. It also tells owners using Flood Safe hoses to check whether they have tripped. Follow that hose maker's instructions; do not remove or defeat a protective device to force the dryer to run.
If a hose or connector leaks, isolate the accessible water supply safely. Burst laundry hoses have separate flooding and electrical precautions. Keep clear of wet outlets and do not disconnect a hose while it remains pressurized.
Check the cycle before changing plumbing
Confirm that the selected cycle actually uses the steam option and that the load fits the model's directions. Whirlpool describes different refresh and touch-up functions and notes that not every cycle or option is available with steam. Its load guidance also warns that smaller loads can produce wet spots or condensation.
Those operating details do not establish that every damp garment means a leak or that a dry garment proves water never entered. Give appliance service the cycle, load, observed behavior and any message rather than repeatedly changing settings to guess at a supply fault.
Keep the washer and dryer requirements separate
A shared cold faucet does not replace the washer's own inlet requirements. Both washer inlet connections are a different model-specific question. If the supply needs a new valve or a changed layout, confirm the dryer instructions and laundry plumbing requirements with the installer.
Once the water arrangement and selected cycle are confirmed, persistent missing steam can require appliance diagnosis. Do not open the dryer, disturb gas piping or bypass controls. Keep the model, hose details and water-side observations available so the appropriate provider can investigate without confusing a dryer function with a washer drain problem.
