A pressure-assisted toilet that hisses continuously or fails to recharge needs its internal system identified before repair. Check recall status, visible supply conditions and the correct manufacturer troubleshooting path. Sound alone cannot identify a failed cartridge or adequate pressure. Do not open the pressure vessel or substitute ordinary gravity-toilet parts for its approved components.
Identify the vessel and check recalls first
The outside toilet brand does not uniquely identify the flushing equipment inside it. Kohler's pressure-assist troubleshooting chart first asks whether the internal vessel is a Kohler system or a Sloan Flushmate, then directs readers to the appropriate manufacturer path. Record the system model and complete serial label without taking the vessel apart.
Some Flushmate production is recalled. Checking a pressure-assisted toilet recall explains the series and serial-number check. Stop using a confirmed recalled system and follow its specific remedy. Do not keep testing it because it still flushes or try to repair an obviously damaged vessel.
Check the visible supply and operating history
Note whether the toilet never worked after installation, stopped after service, or gradually changed. Look for a kink in the accessible supply line and compare the shutoff position with the installed system's instructions. Do not force a corroded valve or disconnect a pressurized connection to test its flow.
Kohler's cited chart includes inadequate supply conditions, actuator adjustment, an inlet screen and the air inducer in its model-specific diagnostic sequence. It sends uncertain pressure conditions to a plumber. The chart is not permission to assume that hearing air proves the system is receiving enough water.
Do not copy a minimum pressure or adjustment dimension from another vessel. A toilet that does not flush all the way covers other designs too; use the actual pressure-assist instructions for this unit.
Have the correct part and water path assessed
Tell the service provider whether the sound occurs only during recharge or continues after it should finish, and whether water is escaping outside the vessel. Those observations help define the problem but do not uniquely prove a failed cartridge.
Leave vessel opening and pressure-sensitive component service to the manufacturer-approved procedure and qualified assistance. Do not improvise a seal. The fixtures discussed in flushometer versus tank toilets use different flushing systems. A directly supplied commercial flushometer, a gravity tank and a pressure-assisted tank cannot share a generic rebuild instruction.
