When should I use Moen Flo Sleep Mode for planned water use?

Updated October 4, 2026
Quick Answer

Moen describes Sleep Mode as a temporary option for irregular water use that might trigger an unwanted alarm. While active, it suppresses alerts and automatic shutoff, so the home loses protection. Confirm the actual mode and restore normal operation after the event. Do not use Sleep Mode to conceal an unresolved leak or assume it is required whenever occupants sleep.

Know what is deliberately suspended

Sleep Mode is a device setting, not an instruction to disable leak protection every night. Moen's mode guide lists sleeping among ordinary activities for Home Mode. Its Sleep Mode guidance concerns expected irregular water use, such as a pool refill or an unusually large gathering.

Moen says Sleep Mode ignores proactive and real-time tests and parameters, quiets notifications and prevents automatic shutoff. That tradeoff must be understood before selecting it. A quiet phone during Sleep Mode does not establish that the plumbing is dry.

Confirm the current app and installed device instructions, including any available duration or return behavior. This page does not assign one timer setting to every app version or promise that an unknown device will restore protection by itself.

Separate a planned event from an unexplained warning

A known larger-than-usual water-use event can resemble abnormal use to a monitoring system. Moen gives car washing, refilling a pool and guests as examples for considering Sleep Mode. Establish the intended event and end point before changing the setting.

An unexplained continuous flow, recurring failed Health Test, visible water or an unknown automatic shutoff calls for investigation instead. Do not teach the system to accept a leak by leaving protection suspended.

Home, Away and Learning are different states

Moen's mode comparison identifies Home Mode as the regular day-to-day state, with normal notifications and automatic shutoff. Away Mode addresses extended absence and has different expectations for water use. Selecting Sleep Mode is not the same as selecting Away Mode.

The same guide says the device operates in Sleep Mode during its initial Learning Mode, without those automatic protections. Review the actual setup state after installation or an ownership reset; an account connection alone cannot demonstrate that learning has ended.

For a sale or ownership reset, follow the Flo account and device transfer checklist so the departing and incoming owners know which setup steps remain.

End the event and verify operation

Use the current app instructions to return to the appropriate normal mode, and verify the displayed state. Keep an accessible manual plumbing shutoff and address any alert or observed leak discovered during the event. Do not leave the device sleeping because repeated warnings are inconvenient.

Outage behavior is another limit: restored Wi-Fi does not override a deliberately suspended mode. Smart shutoff selection also explains required fire-sprinkler separation. Neither mode changes nor a water-use event should be used to bypass required fire-water protection. Record what was planned and when normal monitoring resumed so another occupant does not mistake silence for protection.
