Grundfos's instructions promise the original user freedom from material and workmanship defects for 30 months from installation, but no more than 36 months from manufacture. The remedy is repair or replacement, and Grundfos does not pay removal or installation costs. Misuse or a non-compliant install voids coverage.
How long does the warranty last?
Grundfos warrants its products to the original user only, to be free of defects in material and workmanship for 30 months from the date of installation, but not more than 36 months from the date of manufacture. Both limits apply, and the shorter one wins.
Here is how that plays out, using our own examples of the date math. If the pump is installed one month after it was made, the 30-month limit from installation ends first, at month 31 from manufacture. If it sits on a shelf for eight months and is then installed, 30 months from installation would reach month 38, but the 36-month cap from manufacture stops coverage at month 36, which is 28 months after installation. Because the cap starts at manufacture, a unit that waits a long time in a warehouse or on a shelf has less coverage than the headline number suggests.
Grundfos also says products repaired or replaced under the warranty continue to be covered only through the remainder of the original warranty period, counted from the original purchase date. A replacement pump does not restart the clock.
What does the warranty cover, and what does it not?
The warranty covers defects in material and workmanship. Grundfos's liability is limited to repairing or replacing the product at Grundfos's option, without charge, F.O.B. Grundfos's factory or authorized service station. The obligation covers any product of Grundfos manufacture. Grundfos says products it sells but does not manufacture are subject to the warranty provided by the manufacturer of those products, not Grundfos's warranty.
### What does it not cover?
Grundfos lists these limits:
- Removal, installation and transportation. Grundfos will not be liable for any costs of removal, installation, transportation, or any other charges that may arise in connection with a warranty claim.
- Abnormal conditions, accident, abuse or misuse. Damage or wear from these is excluded.
- Unauthorized alteration or repair. The warranty does not cover it.
- An install that departs from the instructions. Grundfos excludes damage if the product was not installed in accordance with its printed installation and operating instructions and accepted codes of good practice.
- Normal wear and tear. The warranty does not cover it.
- Incidental or consequential damages, losses or expenses. Grundfos will not be liable for them, whether they arise from installation, use, or any other cause.
The manual adds that there are no express or implied warranties beyond those described. It also says some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion or limitation of incidental or consequential damages, or limits on how long implied warranties last, so those limits may not apply to you. It says the warranty gives you specific legal rights and you may have other rights that vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction. The FTC says laws in every state create implied warranties, which cover almost everything you buy, and that they may last as long as four years in some states. For your state's rules, the FTC points to a state consumer protection office or a lawyer.
### Which installation mistakes put the warranty at risk?
The installation section of the manual is blunt. Grundfos says failure to follow the procedures in the document could affect your warranty and may cause inadvertent property damage. Two specific items appear in the valve steps. Grundfos says to use only the flex hoses provided in the kit, because other hoses could damage the bypass valve and void the product warranty. It also says overtightening the flex hose connections can cause the valve to leak and cause localized water damage. Grundfos's rule is to tighten by hand, plus 1/4 turn with a wrench. Our page on how to install a Grundfos Comfort System pump walks through the full install.
Who can make a claim?
Only the original user. If you bought a house with a Comfort System already installed, the original owner's warranty does not pass to you under these terms, and the age of the pump matters too. The FTC gives advice that applies here: save a copy of the warranty and save the product receipt with it. The receipt proves the date you bought the product and that you are the original owner.
Because the clock starts at installation, keep proof of the installation date too. Grundfos asks for it when you file, as the next section shows.
How do you file a claim?
Grundfos gives these steps in the manual:
- 1Return the defective product to the distributor or dealer you bought it from.
- 2Include your proof of purchase, the installation date, the failure date and supporting installation data.
- 3Wait for the dealer to contact Grundfos or an authorized service station for instructions.
- 4If the product goes back to Grundfos or a service station, send it freight prepaid. Include documentation supporting the claim and a Return Material Authorization if you are told to.
Since the warranty does not pay for removal or installation, you or a plumber must pull the pump before you can return it. Plan for the hot water to be out of the loop while you wait.
### How can you tell if the pump has failed?
Grundfos's fault finding table lists three causes when the pump does not run: it is not connected to the power supply, the circuit breaker has tripped, or the pump is defective. The first two are your fix, not a warranty matter. Check the plug, the outlet and the breaker, then check the manual switch on the timer. Our page on how to set the timer on a Grundfos Comfort System covers those positions.
### Does the system need maintenance?
Grundfos says the Comfort System is maintenance free, and no service is required. That statement applies to the product as described. ENERGY STAR notes that demand recirculating systems can be controlled by a button, a timer or a motion sensor, and the Comfort System's timer is the control that needs your attention over time. It does not replace the installation checks and the leak check on the bypass valve.
### What should you have ready?
Before you contact the dealer, gather the receipt, the date you installed the pump, the date it stopped working, and a note of what you checked. If a plumber did the install, ask for a copy of the invoice, since it can show the installation date. Photos of the nameplate and the valve help too.
Should you use the warranty or call a plumber?
Use both. The warranty can supply a replacement pump, but it does not cover the labor to remove and reinstall it. A plumber can shut off and drain the heater's hot outlet, swap the pump, check the bypass valve and confirm that hot water reaches the far faucet quickly. HQ Plumbing & Air is licensed and insured, gives free estimates, quotes an upfront price, and offers 24/7 service. If your hot water depends on the pump, see why you get no hot water unless the recirculating pump is running. For whether the pump is worth having, see our recirculation pump page.
