Pump Volute

Updated October 4, 2026
Definition

A pump volute is the stationary scroll-shaped passage around an impeller in an identified centrifugal-pump casing. It receives liquid leaving the rotating impeller and guides it toward the discharge. The volute belongs to the liquid-handling portion of the pump; it is different from the motor, the impeller and an inlet strainer basket.

Follow the part drawing around the impeller

Grundfos's pump handbook distinguishes single-volute and double-volute casings. Its illustrated section shows the surrounding passage and identifies a guide vane in the double-volute arrangement. Those are casing designs, not instructions to add an improvised divider to a pump.

The handbook also distinguishes return-channel casings in multistage pumps. Do not assume every pump collects its liquid through the same scroll-shaped arrangement or that every outer cover is a separately replaceable volute.

Xylem's Vogel LSN brochure gives a named volute-casing example. Its parts list identifies the casing separately from the impeller, seal-chamber cover, shaft and casing gasket. Use the actual model's diagram to identify what a supplier means by wet end, casing or volute rather than ordering from a general photograph.

Geometry belongs to the complete pump design

Grundfos explains that casing pressure creates radial forces and that the force depends on operating flow and head. Its discussion of single and double volutes therefore concerns hydraulic design, not simply different outer shell shapes.

A replacement casing must match the identified pump assembly and service. Xylem's brochure specifies materials and fluid applications for its own industrial series; it does not approve that pump or an arbitrary replacement casing for household sewage, pool water or another duty.

Our pump curve entry explains the model's performance information. A casing that physically fits is not evidence that an altered assembly retains the documented curve, solids-handling ability or operating limits.

The pump cavitation entry addresses a separate vapor-pressure phenomenon. Noise or erosion near a casing does not identify cavitation from appearance alone, and changing the housing does not complete the suction assessment.

Describe the finding before choosing a repair

Keep the pump identification, part drawing and observed symptom together. If a report names an obstructed volute, ask what evidence identifies the affected passage and whether the impeller or discharge path is also involved. Our sewage pump with no delivery guide covers that wider fault list.

A pump that does not start has a different investigation, covered in sump-pump startup faults. For pool equipment, pump leak locations distinguishes a housing defect from lid, shaft-seal and connection leaks.

Do not reach into a pump, remove a casing or open a sewage basin to identify the part. Have the responsible provider follow the installed equipment's electrical isolation, pressure relief and service requirements. A component definition helps interpret the report; it does not establish the cause or authorize disassembly.
