Pipe Ovality

Updated October 4, 2026
Definition

Pipe ovality describes how far a pipe's cross-section departs from a circle. An oval section has different maximum and minimum diameters. A measurement or percentage needs its stated dimensional reference, calculation basis and acceptance requirement; the word ovality alone does not establish damage severity or compatibility with a fitting.

Measure the specified cross-section

The Plastics Pipe Institute's handbook glossary distinguishes an absolute out-of-roundness difference from ovality reported as a percentage. Its percentage definition relates the maximum and minimum measured outside diameters to an average outside diameter.

Use the actual specification's measurement locations, diameter reference and calculation method. Do not substitute an inside-diameter estimate or assume every document uses the same denominator. Preserve the measured dimensions and units with the reported result.

The handbook's manufacturing chapter describes checking diameter, wall thickness and ovality against the governing product specification. That makes ovality a dimensional quality question as well as a possible installed-condition observation; it is not confined to damaged old sewer lines.

The applicable tolerance belongs to the system

Victaulic's field handbook gives outside-diameter and ovality requirements for identified grooved piping systems. It explains that excessive major/minor diameter differences can make coupling assembly difficult. Those requirements are not a universal limit for every plastic drain, copper tube or sewer liner.

Nominal pipe size identifies a size designation, not proof that an individual pipe end is sufficiently round. A matching label cannot replace the necessary dimensional and condition checks before installing a grooved coupling.

Do not try to pull a loaded or unsuitable pipe into shape by forcing a connector tighter. The responsible installer needs the identified pipe and joint requirements, together with an assessment of the actual cause and condition.

A camera observation differs from a dimensional result

An egg-shaped appearance on a sewer recording can justify further assessment, but it is not automatically a calibrated ovality measurement. Perspective, deposits and incomplete visibility can affect what a picture shows.

Our Orangeburg camera-inspection guide addresses material and condition clues. The camera-inspection explanation also separates visible findings from information that the camera cannot establish.

If a report gives an ovality percentage, ask how it was measured, where it applies and which criterion was used. Retain the footage and dimensional evidence. Roundness alone cannot establish remaining service life, joint integrity or whether a particular repair method is permitted.
