Gauge and Absolute Pressure

Updated October 4, 2026
Definition

Gauge pressure measures pressure relative to the surrounding atmospheric pressure. Absolute pressure measures it relative to an ideal vacuum. A pressure value needs that reference as well as its units; the same numerical value with a different reference describes a different physical condition.

Gauge pressure measures pressure relative to the surrounding atmospheric pressure. Absolute pressure measures it relative to an ideal vacuum. A pressure value needs that reference as well as its units; the same numerical value with a different reference describes a different physical condition.

The reference is part of the measurement

WIKA defines gauge pressure as absolute pressure minus the prevailing atmospheric pressure. The Department of Energy's pumping-system glossary likewise uses atmospheric pressure as the zero reference for gauge pressure and vacuum as the reference for absolute pressure.

Local atmospheric pressure changes with altitude and weather. Converting between the two references therefore requires the relevant atmospheric value, not an assumption that one fixed adjustment is correct everywhere.

An instrument described casually as a pressure gauge is not sufficient identification. Confirm whether the actual instrument measures gauge, absolute or another specified pressure relationship, and check its documented range and units.

Keep suffixes and calculation conditions intact

The notation psig identifies pounds per square inch gauge; psia identifies pounds per square inch absolute. A document using psi without a reference needs its surrounding definitions or instructions checked. Do not silently add or remove a suffix when copying a result.

Swagelok's valve-flow bulletin identifies absolute-pressure inputs in its gas-flow equations. That is an example of why a pressure reference matters to a calculation, not a household gas-sizing or testing procedure.

Our valve flow coefficient entry explains a separate specification. The correct coefficient cannot rescue a calculation whose pressure units or references have been mixed. Likewise, total dynamic head has its own system and operating-flow context.

What to preserve in a test or diagnostic record

Record the measured value, units, pressure reference, instrument identification and where and when the reading was taken. Include the stated test or operating condition rather than retaining only a photograph of a pointer.

For a code-controlled test, the applicable procedure and required instrument govern acceptance. Our gas-line pressure-test guide addresses that separate qualified-work question. Understanding psig does not authorize a test medium, target pressure or adjustment to installed equipment.

A correct reference label also does not establish instrument calibration, system integrity or suitable pressure for every fixture. Ask the responsible provider to explain which measurement the specification requires and how the recorded reading answers that question before comparing values from different documents.
