Check Valve Cracking Pressure

Updated October 4, 2026
Definition

Check valve cracking pressure describes the specified pressure condition at which a check valve first begins passing forward flow. It is an opening threshold under stated test conditions, rather than the valve's maximum working pressure or a promise of full flow at that threshold. The manufacturer's definition and test conditions matter.

Check valve cracking pressure describes the specified pressure condition at which a check valve first begins passing forward flow. It is an opening threshold under stated test conditions, rather than the valve's maximum working pressure or a promise of full flow at that threshold. The manufacturer's definition and test conditions matter.

First flow is different from full flow

Swagelok's check-valve catalog defines cracking pressure by the first indication of flow in its stated test. That starting point does not mean the valve is fully open or that a pump will deliver its intended flow through the complete piping system.

The catalog separately publishes flow data and pressure-temperature ratings. Its SS-4C-1 product page likewise lists cracking pressure, maximum flow coefficient and a pressure rating as separate specifications. That named industrial component illustrates the distinctions; it is not a recommendation for a drinking-water or fire-protection installation.

A pump selection must account for the operating flow and system resistance, not just the point where one component begins to open. Our total dynamic head entry explains that larger system requirement. The valve flow coefficient entry explains the separate resistance metric on a valve specification.

Closing behavior has its own specification

Swagelok distinguishes cracking pressure from reseal pressure, where its test shows no indication of flow. Its catalog gives separate ranges and notes that an initial opening threshold may be higher after a valve has not operated for a period of time.

That is why an opening value alone cannot establish every aspect of the valve's behavior. The model, temperature, seal material and published operating conditions remain relevant. Do not assume that another valve with the same connection size has the same opening or closing characteristics.

A standalone check valve also is not automatically an approved backflow prevention assembly. Our double detector check assembly guide describes a different, testable assembly and its application requirements. A component threshold does not establish the approval or field-test result of that assembly.

Information for the contractor's review

Provide the exact valve model, intended fluid, equipment identification and any available pump or system specification. Ask which cracking and reseal values apply, and whether the manufacturer's flow data were considered at the intended operating point.

If a report concerns an approved backflow assembly, let the certified tester interpret its required test readings and procedure. Do not use an unrelated check-valve catalog to override a failed assembly test.

Do not adjust a spring, dismantle an unfamiliar valve or pressure-test the piping to find the threshold yourself. A symptom such as low flow may involve the pump, a blockage or another component; the catalog value alone does not diagnose it.
