Can my under-sink RO system be installed in a laundry or utility room instead?

Updated October 4, 2026
Quick Answer

Some point-of-use RO models permit remote interior installation with the drinking faucet elsewhere. The Whirlpool WHER25 manual requires a nearby supply, suitable drain and enough space for the system. Confirm the actual model's tubing, drain, temperature and access requirements before relocating it. Remote placement does not turn a drinking-water unit into whole-house treatment.

Confirm that the installed model allows remote placement

The current Whirlpool WHER25 manual, 7399997 RevC lists remote interior installation as an option and gives laundry or utility rooms as examples. It requires a nearby water source and drain point and instructs the installer to check space requirements.

That approval belongs to the named system. Obtain the actual manual and any manufacturer's review needed for another RO model, a pump-equipped arrangement or an unusually long route. The existing RO installation overview describes the basic components; their new locations still need a complete installation plan.

A faucet-fed countertop unit is a separate alternative, rather than a remote under-sink hose arrangement. Check the actual countertop RO faucet and adapter compatibility, including the cited APEC exclusions, before choosing it to save cabinet space.

Plan the reject-water drain separately

Whirlpool's remote-installation article uses a remote drain arrangement rather than copying every tube connection from its under-sink setup. The manual contains a dedicated remote drain-point and air-gap section.

Have the installer confirm the suitable receiving drain, required air gap, tubing route and local requirements. Do not run reject water into a sealed sewer connection or discard a tube because a different system's online checklist calls it unnecessary. Only the actual approved configuration governs.

If drain noise or water at an air-gap opening is already the concern, RO air-gap troubleshooting helps describe it before the system is relocated. Moving the assembly does not repair a blocked receiving drain.

Preserve temperature protection and service access

The WHER25 manual specifies supply-water temperature limits. A remote-interior option does not approve an exposed outdoor location or every hot or freezing garage. Confirm the equipment's environmental and water conditions with the manufacturer before selecting the space.

Leave the required clearance to replace filters, inspect connections and operate the identified shutoffs. The remote-installation article expressly calls for enough room to change filters. Protect the tubing route from pinching and interference; do not assume another model's permitted distance or elevation applies.

Keep the treatment purpose and commissioning checks

The faucet is still served by a point-of-use drinking-water system. Remote placement alone does not authorize feeding the home's showers or other fixtures; under-sink versus whole-house RO explains that different sizing decision.

After relocation, complete the maker's applicable sanitizing, leak testing and purging procedures. Keep the revised layout, manual and accessible shutoff locations with the maintenance record. Evaluate delivery at the intended faucet rather than assuming additional tubing preserves the original performance.
