Leaking pipe or fitting in a business: clamp or cut-out repair?

Updated October 4, 2026
Quick Answer

A clamp or wrap can slow a leak at a pinhole or small defect, but it is a temporary measure. A leak at a fitting or a failed joint is usually repaired by cutting out and replacing that section. Isolate the water first, and ask the plumber whether a patch is meant to be temporary.

What actually failed?

FailureTypical response
Pinhole in a straight run of pipeCut out and replace the section, or a temporary clamp while parts are ordered
Leak at a threaded, soldered or pressed fittingRemake or replace the fitting
Cracked plastic pipe or fittingReplace the damaged piece
Many leaks in one lineReplace more of the line, because the pipe itself is failing

A clamp or wrap works from the outside on a defect and can buy time. It does not restore the pipe. If the cause is corrosion or age, nearby sections are likely to follow. Pinhole leaks in copper explains the corrosion behind them, and copper press fittings that leak after repair covers a common repair-side failure.

What does the manufacturer or EPA say?

EPA's commercial guidance says to repair a leaking fixture or water-using equipment according to the manufacturer's specifications, and to replace it with new, properly functioning equipment if necessary. The same idea applies to fittings: follow the maker's instructions for the joint type.

BrassCraft's installation instructions for its supply stops warn not to overtighten, since overtightening can cause the product to crack and fail over time, and say not to reuse a damaged or corroded product. Cranking on a weeping fitting is often how a small leak becomes a cracked one.

Why does Phoenix heat matter?

Phoenix Water Services notes that exposed pipes, especially plastic ones such as PVC, are more susceptible to extreme temperatures, leaks and breaks, and suggests insulating them or relocating them when practical. Rooftop and exterior runs at a business often fall into that group. Roof drain piping and exposed lines are worth a look; see roof drain leaks.

What to do while you wait

Shut the water off at the nearest valve, and keep the area dry so the damage doesn't spread. Phoenix's guidance for a broken pipe is to turn off the water at the main shutoff and call a plumber. Don't count a clamp as the repair. Ask for a written note of what was done and what remains. A work-order record keeps it straight.
