Can a heat-recovery bar glasswasher reuse my old hot-water connection?

Updated October 4, 2026
Quick Answer

Check the exact model before reusing the old supply. Hobart’s LXn/LXGn manual specifies cold water for its LXGnR heat-recovery glasswasher and hot water for the LXGnPR chemical-sanitizing model. High-temperature sanitizing does not identify the inlet by itself. Submit the selected instructions and specifications for local review, and resolve document differences before changing connections.

Does high-temperature sanitizing always mean a hot-water inlet?

No. Separate the temperature used to sanitize the glassware from the temperature required at the building connection. The selected machine can heat water internally and use its incoming supply for another part of the process.

Hobart’s LXn / LXGn instructions manual, F41243 dated December 2024, lists the LXGnR as a hot-water-sanitizing model with internal energy recovery and a booster. Its supply table calls for cold water. The LXGnPR chemical-sanitizing model uses hot water. This is a comparison of those documented models, not a rule for every glasswasher.

Keep the full model suffix and selected options on the equipment schedule. “High temperature” or the brand name alone leaves out the connection decision.

Can the existing pipe simply stay connected?

Have the equipment supplier and plumbing designer compare the old arrangement with the replacement’s actual instructions. A hose that physically fits does not prove the supplied water temperature is suitable for heat recovery.

The LXGnR specification identifies a single fill-and-rinse connection and recommends a cold supply. The operator manual also addresses incoming-water temperature and directs users to Hobart Service when that cold supply is consistently above its stated limit or excessive steam remains after condensing.

Measure the actual supply under representative use and seasonal conditions. Do not assume a pipe labeled cold will always deliver the required temperature. Give the results to the manufacturer; do not improvise cooling equipment, defeat a control or change a household-style heater setting to force the machine to run.

What if the specification and manual give different ranges?

Resolve the difference before installation. The captured December 2024 manual and March 2025 LXGnR specification publish different cold-water temperature ranges. A recommended specification range and an operating-table limit are not automatically interchangeable.

Ask Hobart or the authorized equipment provider for the current requirements for the exact unit, including its model, options and document revisions. Retain the written response with the proposed connection drawing. This page does not select one range as permission to disregard the other.

How does this fit Maricopa County review?

The County’s October 15, 2025 hot-water supply guide describes a general hot-fed booster approach for high-temperature warewashing. It also says it is not all-inclusive and calls for manufacturer specifications in review. That general approach and the named machine’s cold-feed instructions need a model-specific decision from the responsible reviewer.

Submit the exact documents before purchasing or changing the connection. Do not interpret this comparison as a County exemption, automatic model acceptance or permission to open with an unresolved requirement. The booster-heater overview addresses the general arrangement, while the kitchen temperature guide separates other delivery temperatures.

What else should the replacement review retain?

Confirm the installed unit’s flowing-pressure, water-quality, electrical and drain requirements with the appropriate providers. Grease-interceptor routing remains a separate destination question; a different water feed does not resolve it.

Use the equipment-substitution review for an altered approved model. Keep the accepted connection drawing and supplier instructions with the equipment. Plumbing connections, equipment startup and the food-establishment operating checks need their own assigned responsibilities.
